Milan Rastislav Štefánik (1880-1919), is well known to Slovak’s the world over. He was a politician and diplomat, aviator and adventurer, a freemason, and an astronomer. He believed strongly in Czechoslovakian sovereignty and campaigned across Europe to this end. Commissioned as part of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, The Impossible Voyage is a novel approach to telling the story of Štefánik short but very full life. Part historical drama, part adventure, part romance, Slovak animator and director Noro Držiak presents a fun and enjoyable look at this man’s very unique life.
As the English title suggests, the film is also a homage to early cinema pioneer Georges Méliès. Through the combination of trick illusions, hand paintings, puppetry, and a whole assortment of special effects.
